Bikemen Stage II goes very well / 二輪人第二站的好成績
After Norikura, I had to think about Tour de New Caledonia. So I was still basically resting and not training too much. I made sure to train enough to not lose my power and ate more food than normal to help recovery. One week after Norikura, the Bikemen.net criterium was held.
It was a classic American style crit, 1km per lap and 4 corners. I grew up with these types of races and I miss them, so it’s nice have one in Taiwan.
It was a hot day and humid near the shore. I had to keep cool prior to the race. We got to the race very early and I had a lot of time to warm up on the trainer which really helped me get ready to race hard. Younger riders usually can “turn it on” right away after the race starts.
At this race only me and Leo were racing from Team Fuji, so it was going to be hard to control the group if either of us broke away. /
Once the race started, all the big sprinter riders began attacking like crazy for about 3 laps. Each took a turn attacking and trying to breakaway. As the ocean breeze is strong, I knew it would be hard to stay away even if the attach is successful, so I decided to in the back and watched to conserve energy at first. After 3 laps of 60, I saw the main racers tired and resting for a moment, and from my experiences before, knew this was an opportunity to breakaway, so I attacked.
Immediately I built up a good gap of about 20 seconds and kept motoring. I used a 53×14 and held around 330 to 350 watts for the breakaway. Over the next 10 laps I built up around a 45 second gap and thought I could start to relax a bit. So I shifted to the 53 x 16 and lowered my speed from about 42km/h average to 39. But very quickly the chase group brought my gap back down to about 20 seconds and I had to motor again. Thank god I have Leo in the pack, who legitimately bought me some time to rest during the race. I shifted back to the 14 and upped my speed. For a while I held the chase group at 20 seconds, but then they must have slowed down because my gap grew again. After about 30km it was over a minute.
During this time, the main pack had split into many groups and I was catching and lapping many riders. During the race I tried very hard to keep a low profile. I tried to keep my arms bent 90 degrees at all times and my head down. It was a windy course and not keeping aero would probably cost me the race. (After home all the small muscles that I don’t usually use were aching. Annie had to massage me a lot to recover for my next big race.)
Finally after 40km, my gap was very big and I had lapped every rider except the chase group. But that was about to change. After a 42km solo breakaway, I caught the chase group and lapped them! It was a very good feeling. Once I caught them, the race organizers pulled me out, declared me the winner and told the chase group they had 2 laps remaining.
The chase group sprinted to the finish and Leo got 5th. I have to thank Leo for a job well done. Those who do not understand group work may think Leo was just screwing around in the pack. The reality is that he had to sacrifice his energy to chase down every attack to ensure my position. Not just anyone who can do his job. Leo’s training program also includes many tough intervals and his training result was thoroughly shown through in this race. With more experience and time, I know Leo will be able to dominate the field soon.

Wow! Chris, you da man!!
It is very impressive to lap everyone in the race, specially in a flat crit!
Good job Leo, go Fuji Team!
